There were a lot of positive things about this book that I really liked - the writing style was great, and Rosa's voice was really strong. I was really happy reading and think it’ll be one of those books I’ll re-read on a regular basis. Shine has a charm that I love so much from fairytales. I did struggle a little with the letters at the start, but as the story progressed I grew to love them. Despite the fact that the letters are set in a different time they work with Rosa’s story. The book is narrated by Rosa with occasional letters addressed to someone called Kat in between. By making friends with Ansel95 online Rosa not only breaks her father’s rules but her own. Her only companion is Yaya, who tells her stories while her father works at the hospital. Because of Rosa’s ‘condition’ she is hidden away in her room. Shine is a beautifully written book about Rosa, a young girl that lives on Mirasol, a small island with a very superstitious community.

I’d heard of Candy Gourlay previously but hadn’t read any of her works. It’s was one of those lovely surprises that occasionally come through the letterbox. While I did receive this title from Random House it was not requested. It won the Crystal Kite Prize for Europe and the National Book Award in the Philippines. Her debut Tall Story was listed for 13 prizes including the Waterstones, the Blue Peter and the Branford Boase. Shine a ghost story for teens was shortlisted for the Guardian Children's Book Prize. Her picture book, Is It a Mermaid, lushly illustrated by Francesca Chessa, was nominated for the Kate Greenaway Medal. Her novel Bone Talk was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal and the Costa Prize in 2019 – it is set in the moment when headhunting tribes in the Philippines come face to face with American invaders. She has written a comics biography Illustrated by Tom Knight of the explorer Ferdinand Magellan, who happens to be credited with “discovering” the Philippines. Her latest book is Mike Falls Up, illustrated by Carles Ballesteros, a portal fantasy for young readers beginning to explore beyond picture books. It took her years to learn that Filipino stories too, belong in the pages of books.
